Filing for Unemployment Insurance in Canada

Any Canadian citizen who loses their employment position in Canada must within a period of 4 weeks after losing their job claim unemployment benefits; otherwise they will have left it too late.

There are certain procedures to be followed when making the application – they are as follows:

You must get an application form from Service Canada who manages the unemployment insurance fund in Canada. They have an online website or can be contacted at their employment centre at the number 1 (866) 783-5567. There is probably a Service Canada Centre in your area where you can collect an application form personally.

Remember that you must take along your identification. All information relating to your previous employment must be provided preferably with documentation obtained from your previous employers. These details would contain information as to how long you had worked there and what remuneration you acquired during the tenure of your employment.

Should you encounter any problems with your previous employer regarding this vital information, contact the service center in your area as to how you should proceed with your claim.

Remember that in order to obtain any benefits you must give detailed and accurate information on the application form as to why you were dismissed. Your application will be judged on its merits and may be approved or rejected.

Should you be successful with your claim and receive unemployment benefits and have to leave Canada report this situation to your Service Canada Center, otherwise penalties such as a fine could be imposed on you and this could result in a loss of any financial benefits you may have been awarded.
